J.K. Rowling is a famous British writer and someone who gives a lot of money to help others. She's best known for creating the Harry Potter stories, which are about a young wizard and his adventures. These books have won many awards and have been read by over 500 million people, making them the most popular book series ever. They also turned into eight very successful movies.

Rowling was born in England in 1965. She started writing the Harry Potter books in 1990 while she was working for a group called Amnesty International. The first book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," came out in 1997 and became a big hit. The next six books came out over the next ten years, and they were all bestsellers.

Besides Harry Potter, Rowling wrote some other books too, like "The Casual Vacancy" in 2012, which is a crime story for grown-ups, and a detective series called Cormoran Strike, which she wrote under the name Robert Galbraith. She also wrote the stories for the Fantastic Beasts movies, which happen in the same world as Harry Potter.

Rowling also cares about helping kids and has a group called Lumos, which looks out for their rights. She started it in 2005. For her good work, she got some important awards like the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2001 and the Companion of Honour (CH) in 2010.
